The Importance of Oil Change
Engine oil is your vehicles lifeblood. It is important to ensure that the oil in your engine is clean and at the proper level. Over time oil breaks down due to friction, High temperatures and contaminants from unburned fuel that makes its way past the piston rings into the crankcase. Contaminated oil will lose its lubrication properties and if not replaced urgently, extensive damage to the engine may result. Its also important to use a high quality oil. Oil should be certified by the American Petroleum Institute. At YHS Automotive we use a high quality API Certified synthetic blend oil or a full synthetic oil on all of our oil changes. Regular oil changes have other benefits too, aside from keeping your engine lubricated, Fresh clean oil helps maintain your engines seals and gaskets. Which means no oil leaks in your garage or on your drive way, You will also enjoy improved engine performance along with better gas mileage due to less friction. Cleaner emissions and less wear and tear on your engine. Conclusion: Changing your oil on a routine basis is one of the most important and inexpensive maintenance items that can be done on your vehicle. Let’s face it… It’s cheaper than the alternative.
Recommended Oil Change Intervals
The late model Honda’s and Acura’s have an Oil percentage reminder light on the dash or in the information center. The oil should be changed when the indicator shows 15% oil life. This will happen somewhere between the 5- 10,000 mile mark. For Toyota and Lexus models 06 and newer there is an oil change reminder light that will come on when you are due. It is also around the 5- 10,000 mile mark.
YHS Automotive suggests changing your oil every 3,500 miles when using a synthetic blend and every 6000 miles when using a full synthetic. Why? Heat, stop and go traffic in the Houston area, tighter engine tolerances and higher operating temperatures. Newer vehicles require lighter weight oil. Instead of 5w-30 the newer models are using 5w-20 and 0w-20. The lower weight oils are necessary for the tight engine tolerances of today’s engines.
Also, engine operating temperatures have increased by 30 degrees over the years. Oil has greatly improved over the years; It’s had to improve for today’s engine and emission requirements. Bottom line, heat breaks down the oil. When your oil is black it’s been broken down for quite some time. The idea is to change your oil before it breaks down to improve your engines life and performance.
